Under The Same Moon

The movie Under the Same Moon is very touch; it reflects the hardship of illegal immigrants and their fears. Rosario is a very strong woman, who face the unequally treatments of her employer and she has to act like nothing is happening to her son. On the other hand, her son Carlitos is a very independent kid, who has the guts to travel alone after his grandmother is dead. He knew what will happen to him after his grandmother pass away and his uncle will force him to do something. He is smart running away, but he is running the risk on his life. However both Rosario’s and Carlitos’ stories are very touch by my heart. Their stories can refer to some of my relatives’ stories, such as two of my cousins who have no legal statues to live in America, but they have tried every possibility to gain green card and unite with their families.

The story is very good, and it is base on a true story. However, many of the scenarios are too dramatic that I feel it is only to entertain audiences but to state what happen to Aliens. For instance, Carlitos lost his money them met his father, and at the dramatic moment that he coincidently met his mother seems that every audience can predict what will happen, and that is what audiences want to see. Even though the story is very good, but the purpose to create this film has nothing to do with the theme, this is too ironic.

Wish of a Desperate Woman

Rosario is a woman who left her family behind illegally across the border of United States to make fortune to her family. In one hand she is a strong woman who faces suppression of her boss in the job because of her illegal immigration status. In the other hand she desperately wants to see her son. She has scarified herself a lot try to bring her son over. She has a solution to it by marry to a guy with citizenship, which she has not because she afraid the might have some impact on her son.

Rosario has gone through all the gaps to across the border, but she still suffering from miss her son Carlitos. Every time she calls Carlitos, he always asked when he can go to America to be with her. She has no answer to it. She was very conflict with it; she is useless when she face her son. She tries to lie to her son as comfort to her son and her self. Even thought she has been suppressed by her boss, but this kind of pain can’t compare to the pain that she is apart from her son. She has done every thing she could to bring her son over, but it ended up useless.

There is a man who has citizenship of United States and he also has feeling to her, she can just marry him and get the paper done to bring Carlitos over. At beginning she hesitates about it, because she has no feeling toward him. Since she was so desperate to see her son and been convince by her friend, she decided to marry him. However, after she agree to marry, she begin hesitate again. She thinks that after they marry she cannot love that will only brought more pain to him. Besides, if she married to a guy who her son is unfamiliar of, it may have impact on her son because her son seems doesn’t need a father. Finally, the complex within her has denied her decision and she rejects the man’s offering.

At the end of the movie, Rosario did end up met her son, but it was other elements leads to the result. Personally I think Rosario’s decision did not solve her problem. Her goal is to bring her son Carlitos to America. She seems been powerless because there is no way she can get the paper done because she is an illegal immigrant. Even she has the choice to marry a citizen to get the papers; finally she denies it, because she doesn’t want her son to have negative view of her. Every decision she had made did not solve the problems.

Dream Land

We do believed in Jesus Christ,

Praying to god was banned within the country of communist.

We hide our cross in a case,

So nobody can find out where it is.

We gather in a hidden place,

So that nobody notices that we’re in a mass.

We do silence our voice,

Afraid that communist will destroy our holy cross.

We do going out to protest,

But we ended up arrested.

They torture us in unimaginative ways,

They beat us up,

They tide our hands in our back so we can no longer setting a praying pose,

They stick needles in our nails,

They do not letting you go to bathroom for days,

They do give you food but water,

They persuade our husband, wife, mother, father, son and daughter to convince us not to pray,

They make us suffer physically and mentally,

Until the day we sign the contract saying we will not longer serve Jesus.

Again, we begin pray secretly,

We praying and dreaming a place where we can serve our god freely,

Place have no religion segregation,

No superior or inferior god,

Jesus created this land that we dream of,

The name is the United States of America,

So we left our home, life, family and memory behind,

We take boats, planes, and roads,

We want to get to the dream land desperately,

As soon as we arrive,

We yell out,

We do believe in Jesus.

Media and Sexuality Amount Teenagers

Refer to Jean Kilbourne “Although boys are sometimes sexualized in an overt way, they are more often portrayed as sexually precocious” (P437) it means that under the influence of media, teenagers always become sexualized. As we all know in today that the sexuality has played an important role in media. Almost every household in United States has at lease one television and a computer. These technologies can easily get in touch with teenagers. On the other hand, certain TV shows, MTV, movies, websites and advertisements contain a lot of sexual images, these images has great influence on these teenagers. For instance, internet is a greatest invention in 21century; we can get information, news and latest releases. However, there are some sinister pop ups that might be a link of a pornographic website. Teenager has no intention of what it is, they might just click on the pop ups. Their actions may make them become sexualized because as soon as they ogle into these pornographic websites and objectification the beauty of women’s body. These may have unnatural effects on teens. For example, teens who are under 18 years old often having sex or masturbating, these activities are not usually acceptable for teens to participate in. Once they involve in this area, anything they do is futile to get out of these field. Many people were confused that how pornographic websites have connections with media? Media originally created these video is for adult’s entertainment. However, as the computer become a part of our daily life, people getting solidarity to it. Teens using computer have become blatant part of daily life. As soon as teens get in touch with it, it will become a source of teen become sexualized because they learn things quickly if what they saw and easily to adopt it.

Duty for Men: Menliness

Refer to Harvey “For the most part, men will always have more manliness than women, and it is up to both sexes to fashion this fact into something good” (453) this quote means that men are stronger than women in general, there are differences between men and women physically.

This related to me is that being a man born in this society, my father always told when I was young that we are stronger than women. He warns me that when I grow up I can not do certain thing that girls does. It will drop my position in the society and will be rejecting by society because you didn’t do a proper thing that men always do. For example, we could often see women work as baby sitter that is because they are weak; baby sitting does not spend too much energy on it. We couldn’t see men participate on this field is because baby sitting is considered girlish. This job is created only for women. If men dose it, it will hurt our men’s pride and reputation on the society.

My girl friend always treated me as her physical slave. Every time she ask me out, she always assign some heavy jobs for me, like taking care of her bags, deliver something for her or fix something that she broke. Every time we went out together, she always ask me to pay the lunch or movie ticket because she say you are a guy, a guy suppose to do that, then she start to act like a pampered child to bed me for it . Will, I think it’s my duty to do it because in order to look good in front of her and others, I have to do it. I’m willing to do it. I think it is my responsibility for it.

The Gender and Ethnicities Matters in the Land of the Free

By hearing the term “Vision Test”, most people will certain it is parts of an eye exam. However, Wes Kim’s “Vision Test” is not simply a regular eye exam. The test is taken place by showing the pictures of women, men and different ethnicities to be determine by a woman who is taking the test. She is judging that the people shown in the pictures are suitable place in certain positions. For example in the middle of video clip, the pictures arrangement showed from Asian to Latino then finally to white European. The woman who is taking she test simply answered with one or two to judging if they are fit to be the influential figure in the society.

The message of this video clip is quite clear that Americans have always been judging others’ capabilities based on their gender, race and ethnicities. Even thought that America is a “Mixed Pot” society and a freedom community, stereotyping and discrimination still existed. According to the video clip, the woman using one or two as the answers to expresses American’s point of view toward gender and ethnicities. This video clip has clearly proved that stereotyping and discrimination have become a mind set. The video clip also shows that most of the Americans showed favorite to the western white males, that means gender and race matters in this country who has declared that everybody has to be treated equal lived in this land. All forty three presidents of the United States have been white, until the failure of the 43rd which brought the first African-American Osama to the stage. If Bush Administration has not disappointed, the favoritism western white male will continue.

I have a strong feeling to this kind of attitudes, because being an Asian lived in New York City. I should be enjoying the freedom and the equalities like western white male do. However, I often am being discriminated by others. I have been called “Chino” and I feel offensive to it, at this point I can’t do anything to it. I concluded that this could be one of the reasons of the formation of some communities, like China Town. Chinese people often been placed in the lower position of American’s social structure. Americans loved Chinese food, but rejecting Chinese in the community. This is ironic, and because of that Chinese squeezed into corner area of America called Chinatown. This may also applies to other ethnics like Latinos, Mexicans and ETC. Even though this kind of mind set may applied to me, but I still wanted to be treated with respect like western white.
