Under the same moon.

The story that touched me the most was the movie "Under the same moon." It was about a mother and son who was apart from each other. Carlitos was living in Mexico with his grandmother, while his mother was living in the United States. Rosario did domestic jobs in order to support her son and herself. After Carlitos grandmother died, he felt the need to find his mother and be reunited with her no matter what it takes. So little Carlitos went out on his own to the USA. After many obstacles and struggles he endured, Carlitos was finally reunited with his mother. He went to the spot she called him from every Sunday at 10 AM. All that was keeping them apart at this moment was flowing traffic and walk signals.

This story touched me the most because it shows the struggles and hardships that people go through on a daily basis. It is a difficult situation to be in.We take everything for granted but some people struggle just to get a little for survival. Many people are separated from their families because of immigration. But Carlitos was determined to see his mother no matter what it took from him. He was a brave little boy because he left Mexico by himself without any sense of direction of where he was going. What touched me was that he had determination to go through all this by himself with just a mailbox number and the place where his mother works phone number. This was all the information he had, it was a tiny piece of information but he was confident that he will find her with this. Also he met Enrique who hard a hard shell around him, but he reached out to Carlitos to help him find his mother. What touched me about this is that people break down their barriers and reach out when we need them and they too have their struggles of their own that they have to deal with. What touched me the most was to see the emotional reunion with Carlitos and his mother Rosario. It is a moment that alot of people are longing to have with their family members;to be happily reunited. This was a very emotional and touching story for me.

A helpless child

In the movie "Under the same moon", Carlitos went through many struggles in order to see his mother afer four years. Carlitos is a young boy who lives in Mexico while his mother works in Los Angeles in the United States working illegally to provide a better life for him. He is eager to be reunited with his mother after four years. In preparation to do so, he worked and saved his money in order for him to cross the border at some point or another at the tender age of nine. Carlitos attended school, took care of his sick grandmother and worked. He faced struggles and obstacles trying to get to his mother by himself after the death of his grandmother.

Carlitos took matters in to his own hands after his grandmother died by paying American college students to bring him in to the United States of America. They were going to bring him in by hiding him in their vehicle. After that plan fell through, Carlitos found other ways to get to his mother. He attempted to buy a ticket, but could not do so because he was too young. He then asked someone to buy the ticket for him, only then to realize he lost his money. He then went to stay with a woman who housed illegal immigrants and then he went to work with them one day. The I.N.S came and in and raid the place, Carlitos and Enrique were the only ones left. Their friendship began roughly, but Carlitos had good faith. Enrique was with him all along the way trying to help him find his mother. Enrique also found Carlitos father for him for the first time.

At the end of the movie, there were moments when the viewer thought that Carlitos and his mother would never be together again. At one point of the movie they passed each other in the streets and another point when Rosario was on her way back to Mexico thinking that Carlitos went back there. After searching for his mother Carlitos did reunite with his mother in a very touching way. It was at the spot she called him from every Sunday morning at 10:00am. He knew of the place because he often asked his mother to describe were she was calling him from. These were essential clues for him to find her because he didn't have her address. Rosario was standing on one side of the road while Carlitos was on the other side. He yelled "mama" and she turned around and saw him, tears of joy came to her eyes as she saw her son for the first time in four years.

I loved the ending of this movie; I thought it was a great one. It also gives you a different perspective on life and what you have. It makes you see life differently and value the things we love and hold close to your heart.

Is it me you see.....?

When you look at me, is it me you see?

Do you see me as an intruder?

Do you see me working as a janitor or washing dishes?

Do you see me stealing your livelihood?

Do you feel safe having your children around me?

Do you see me as a threat?

Do you begin to stereotype when you see me walking the streets?

Did it ever occur to you, that I too have blood running through my veins?

And that I am a person you share these streets we walk on?

We may look different but gives you no right to treat me like dirt.

Our religions, cultures, history, appearance and such may put us apart

But together we share this country; we strive for the same goals.

See me for me and not what you have heard of us.

We came for financial stability, better life for our family among other reasons.

Give us a chance and see who we are, let us prove ourselves to you.

And change your thinking of who we are.

But above all this I hope you see me as a human being.

Someone with feelings and the things that makes us real.

.........Do you see me now..?

The media and sexuality

Kilbourne's article "Two ways a woman can get hurt" says "Although boys are sometimes sexualized in an overt way, they are more often protrayed as sexually precocious,as in the Pepsi commercial featuring the young boy ogling Cindy Crawford's or the jeans ad portraying a very little boy looking up a woman's skirt."

The media has the power to influence young people to do certain acts such as being sexualized. It is shown on TV,music videos, racy poster ads, especially the internet where you have access to everything, everywhere we look it is there. When these things are viewed in the media insidiously it will become a habit for the viewers causing them to do the same.In the media it is okay for a male to be sexually precocious just because of the gender. In societies eyes this is ok.But the controversy starts if a young girl does something of this manner to the opposing sex,its a shocker.Young people practice what they see, they are curious to see what happens. The media objectifies women of todays society in a sexual manner,so to men, women are sexual objects,in time women become futile for what they really are.So in portraying these sexual things we will have a sinister society and then it all goes down hill from there.Immoralities are questioned of the society today and what is important to them.We need to form a society with better immoralities for the future and beyond and change the way media portray these sexualized images and put an end to it.

Ignoring the crowd

" Even if I had managed to make a hit(it never happened) or get the ball over that ridiculously high net, I already had the reputation as a "shrimp", a hopeless nonathlete."

The story of my body by Ortiz Cofer is a personal story of her migration from Puerto Rico to the United States. She writes of the different experiences she had with different body parts and how people made it difficult for her to feel comfortable.

The quote relates to me because when I migrated here in the U.S with my family and I started high school, I liked all my classes except Physical Education. Just the thought of that class made me felt uneasy. I am not good at sports at all and found it difficult to fit in with those who are. I,like Ortiz Cofer was good at the academic part of my studies except when it came to P.E. When in the class on my first days, when playing volley ball on many days and I missed getting the ball over the net, looking around the room you can see people saying something about me.Laughing or doing something that makes you want to run away from it all and hide. This happened many days and after a period of time, I blocked it out and not let it get to me. This was a typical day for me for a while.

Sometimes in your surroundings there will be people and things to make you feel less of yourself, but you just have to ignore them as much as possible even if it seems like the impossible. Ignore the crowd and remember who you are and think high of yourself when others don't-that is my lesson learned from my personal experience.
